″Hey,” James said the following morning. He’d called me just after I’d dropped off Henry, so I put him on Bluetooth and connected the call in the car. “How are you today?”

″Life is shit,” I admitted bluntly. “Total and complete shit. How are you?”

″What’s wrong?” he sang in that annoyed but concerned big-brother tone.

I clenched my teeth, hesitating because I really didn’t like saying it out loud. It felt like I was sealing my fate, and the fate of my marriage, when I put it out into the universe. “Because my husband might be having an affair,” I finally said.

″What?” he growled on the other end. “Are you fucking kidding me?”

″He has pictures and messages from his intern on his phone.”

There was radio silence on the other end. I knew my brother was livid. He was an incredibly loyal and protective man, especially when it came to the people he loved. My heart swelled just knowing that if things did go south between Garret and I, I’d have my big brother there to help me pick up the pieces.

″You still there?” I asked, taking a left.

″Yes,” his tone was clipped. I could tell he was having a hard time reining in his anger. The man had one hell of a temper. So far the only person who was able to bridle and harness him when he went on one of his rampages was Emma. Garret should be thanking his lucky stars at the moment that there was a big stretch of water separating him and my murderous brother. If there wasn’t, he’d be black and blue by the end of the day, that is if he survived at all.

″He denies sleeping with her,” I continued, turning in to my parking lot. “He says it was all her, that she sent the pictures and the messages, that he didn’t encourage her.”

″Do you believe him?”

″I’m not sure what to believe.” I clenched my jaw. “I don’t think he cheated. I truly don’t. But there’s still so much dishonesty. He had those pictures and messages, and he didn’t tell me about them.”

″What are you going to do?”

”I don’t know. And now I’ve fucked up.”

″How?”

I thought about last night and whether I should tell James about Dax. He’d never approved of my relationship with the man, so he’d probably think Dax took advantage of me, even though that wasn’t the case at all. “I took off after I found the pictures. I went to see Dax.”

More silence.

″I … I didn’t sleep with him, if that’s what you’re thinking. We just kissed. But I stopped it.”

″Jeeeesus, Amy.” He grumbled. “How’s Hank handling all of this?” My brother’s love and affection for his nephew was unsurpassed. He’d taken to the little guy right away and spoiled him rotten. So it wasn’t a surprise that he was concerned about how Henry was affected by everything.

″It all went down last night once he was in bed, so he’s none the wiser.”

″That’s good at least.”

″At least.”

″What are you going
