â³Hey,â James said the following morning. Heâd called me just after Iâd dropped off Henry, so I put him on Bluetooth and connected the call in the car. âHow are you today?â
â³Life is shit,â I admitted bluntly. âTotal and complete shit. How are you?â
â³Whatâs wrong?â he sang in that annoyed but concerned big-brother tone.
I clenched my teeth, hesitating because I really didnât like saying it out loud. It felt like I was sealing my fate, and the fate of my marriage, when I put it out into the universe. âBecause my husband might be having an affair,â I finally said.
â³What?â he growled on the other end. âAre you fucking kidding me?â
â³He has pictures and messages from his intern on his phone.â
There was radio silence on the other end. I knew my brother was livid. He was an incredibly loyal and protective man, especially when it came to the people he loved. My heart swelled just knowing that if things did go south between Garret and I, Iâd have my big brother there to help me pick up the pieces.
â³You still there?â I asked, taking a left.
â³Yes,â his tone was clipped. I could tell he was having a hard time reining in his anger. The man had one hell of a temper. So far the only person who was able to bridle and harness him when he went on one of his rampages was Emma. Garret should be thanking his lucky stars at the moment that there was a big stretch of water separating him and my murderous brother. If there wasnât, heâd be black and blue by the end of the day, that is if he survived at all.
â³He denies sleeping with her,â I continued, turning in to my parking lot. âHe says it was all her, that she sent the pictures and the messages, that he didnât encourage her.â
â³Do you believe him?â
â³Iâm not sure what to believe.â I clenched my jaw. âI donât think he cheated. I truly donât. But thereâs still so much dishonesty. He had those pictures and messages, and he didnât tell me about them.â
â³What are you going to do?â
âI donât know. And now Iâve fucked up.â
â³How?â
I thought about last night and whether I should tell James about Dax. Heâd never approved of my relationship with the man, so heâd probably think Dax took advantage of me, even though that wasnât the case at all. âI took off after I found the pictures. I went to see Dax.â
More silence.
â³I ⦠I didnât sleep with him, if thatâs what youâre thinking. We just kissed. But I stopped it.â
â³Jeeeesus, Amy.â He grumbled. âHowâs Hank handling all of this?â My brotherâs love and affection for his nephew was unsurpassed. Heâd taken to the little guy right away and spoiled him rotten. So it wasnât a surprise that he was concerned about how Henry was affected by everything.
â³It all went down last night once he was in bed, so heâs none the wiser.â
â³Thatâs good at least.â
â³At least.â
â³What are you going
